News Gazette Honor Roll track meet: Uni High Boys Edition

With this Friday’s St. Joseph Class 1A sectional meet, the Uni High boys are looking to make some history and finally put themselves on the state map.

If the stellar performance of the Illinek’s team on May 14th’s News Gazette Honor Roll competition showed any evidence of their newfound talent, Uni might as well make their mark at the upcoming sectional meet on Friday, and next Thursday’s State Competition.

Starting off the meet was a 4×800 relay comprised of Aryan Lalwani, Matty Tang, Nathan Durkin, and Henry Kraatz that managed a 4th place finish in a star-studded race, featuring the likes of several 2A and 3A schools from across the state.

Next, freshman Joel Armas, the only individual competitor from Uni, braved the field of the varsity 3200 meter run, adding points to Uni’s score with a 7th place finish.

And if this wasn’t already enough, the spectacular meet ended with Senior Isandro Malik pumping his fist while dashing across the finish line, anchoring a Uni 4×400 relay team that took home first place in a time of 3:31.72. This relay, made up of Nicolas Ramkumar, Alex Dolcos, Kaden Canales, and Isandro Malik accumulated a state qualifying time, a feat that had not been accomplished by a Uni 4×400 since 2014! Also, the team made up of a freshman, sophomore, and 2 seniors came within 2 seconds of the school record; and to think that 2 of these runners weren’t even considering doing track this year.

Using this meet as a stepping stone, the boys team hopes to do some serious damage at state and take home some hardware in the 4×800 and 4×400 meter relays.
