In October, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services introduced a new version of the test that green card holders are required to pass to gain U.S. citizenship.
The 2025 Naturalization Civics Test will have 128 possible questions. Instead of answering ten randomly-selected questions, test takers will now be required to answer 20. They will have to correctly answer at least 12/20 to pass, an increase from six of the previous ten.
The 2025 Naturalization Civics Test is administered in a question-and-answer format by a USCIS officer.
The test has three possible topics of American government, American history, and symbols and holidays. The test has sub-topics of the systems and principles of American government, the rights and responsibilities of citizens, and different periods in U.S. history.
“The ability to become a naturalized citizen is the most meaningful immigration benefit the United States can bestow on an alien,” Joseph B. Edlow, USCIS director, wrote in a Federal Register statement in September. “USCIS is responsible for assessing an alien’s knowledge of civics through testing.”
To the right, test your knowledge of whether you’d be able to pass the 2025 Naturalization Civics Test with the Gargoyle’s selected 20 questions from USCIS’s new question bank. Unlike the official USCIS test, which is administered orally, there is one correct answer of the four provided answer choices.
