Looking for something spooky to do for Halloween? Well, grab your friends, buy some candy, and get ready to scream your heart out at these horror movies! Fair warning: some of these can be pretty gory, so do your own research to ensure they are a good fit.
- Longlegs
Nicholas Cage is Longlegs, a creepy, pale villain with a penchant for off-key singing. A young female FBI agent investigating a strange phenomenon of murder-suicides finds that the answer to her case is much closer to home than she realized. This movie is downright freaky and is definitely on the more disturbing side of horror. If you are looking for something that will have you both terrified and deeply confused, this is the one for you.
- A Quiet Place
John Krasinski’s horror epic tells the story of a family trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world run by monsters who hunt by sound. To evade these creatures, they must remain completely silent at all times. But when an accident calls the creatures to their home, they must find a way to fight them off. This is perfect for apocalypse movie fans and has plenty of jumpscares and suspense!
- The Purge Series
This 5-movie installment takes place in a fictional future America run by the New Founding Fathers, a conservative government that enacts a new holiday- the Purge. On this day, all crime is legal, including murder. Each film follows a different set of characters trying to survive the night as they face off with sadistic masked killers. These thrilling slasher movies come with plenty of jumpscares (and high kill counts- if that’s your thing) and provide some social commentary if you want something more substantive.
- Bodies, Bodies, Bodies
This horror-comedy follows a group of young friends after a game of Bodies, Bodies, Bodies takes a deadly turn. As they slowly turn on each other, these fake friends show their true colors. With plenty of satirical humor about Gen Z and tiktok culture, this movie has some hilarious moments. The scare level is pretty low on this one, making for a great party movie.
- Train to Busan
This is the best zombie movie that I have ever seen. It follows a father and his daughter on their way to meet his ex-wife in Busan when a strange virus infects the train passengers and turns them into high-speed zombies. This movie is incredibly thrilling and had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. If you are looking for a movie that will have you and your friends terrified, this is the one for you.
- Final Destination Series
This classic horror series provides the perfect corny movies for your Halloween festivities. In each film, the main character gets a premonition of a terrible disaster about to take place, after which they rally those around them and flee before their vision can become reality. As punishment for escaping death, one by one, each member of the group is killed in comically gruesome ways. These movies are funny but provide a few good jumpscares and will be the perfect addition to your Halloween party.
- The Others
This Nicole Kidman film from 2001 is a classic ghost movie. It follows a mother and her two children, who move to England during WWII while they wait for their father to return home from the war. When the children start reporting sightings of ghosts, their mother believes it must be the servants playing tricks. Slowly, she realizes something truly supernatural is occurring. This suspenseful movie comes with a Sixth Sense-level plot twist, making it the perfect movie for a spooky evening with friends.
Hope that some of these sparked your interest and will help make your Halloween festivities all the more fun! If you end up with nightmares, please don’t tell your parents to blame me.
