Jojo Sun started the Moon Festival as a Sophomore and single-handedly planned it on her own for two years before starting the Moon Festival committee. While her interview took place, Jojo was still multitasking. Her interview was right before Uni’s swim practice and in between parts of her interview, she chased a bee around for entomology class.
As a sophomore, Jojo organized the first Moon Festival at Uni, and for the last two years she has run the Moon Festival committee. While looking back on the hectic first two years of planning the event Jojo said, “I would sit down and just write emails for four hours. I would always do that then get burnt out from emails.”
Now, she has a team of seven other people to help send emails, organize the event, and get volunteers, and she’s very thankful.
“The underclassmen have been really proactive,” she said.
The Moon Festival is an annual celebration of Asian culture at Uni. This year it’s happening during lunch on September 29th. It is usually a highlight of the year with food and entertainment, like singing, dancing, and music. Uni families and teachers can volunteer at the festival and Uni students can perform.
Jojo said “One thing we’re definitely going to do is we’re going to ask for parents to be more involved.”
A new addition to the festival this year is a longer lunch.
“We requested that the schedule be changed for that day so classes are going to be five minutes shorter.”
This allows lunch to be an hour and 15 minutes, so more can happen during the Moon Festival this year. Her favorite thing about the festival is “seeing everyone dress up – that was really nice to see.”
Reflecting on how it all started Jojo said “Since the beginning people have been really supportive. Administration was on board immediately.” She’s leaving the Moon Festival to the Moon Festival committee she created and knows that they’ll do well in the future.
