After several back-to-back days of rain in Urbana, an unexpected issue arose in several Uni classrooms: flooding. Sheree Denham, Uni’s Office Administrator, first noticed the problem on March 27, when water was visibly dripping from the ceiling in the senior lounge. Several days later, on April 1, the problem had spread, with several other classrooms experiencing flooding.
The rooms most affected included the south attic (4th floor), art room (3rd floor), foreign languages office (2nd floor), women’s restroom (2nd floor), and senior lounge (1st floor). Because these spaces are vertically aligned, it suggests the water is likely entering through the roof and seeping downward through the lower floors.
Robert Fitzgerald, Uni’s Director and Principal, noted that Facilities & Services at the U of I was made aware of the issue, adding that the incident points to the serious need for a new roof.
